How to start Custom Home Construction

Many of our customers come to us after a long and extensive search for the perfect home comes up empty. Sometimes the home they live in is close to what they want but it is lacking one or two major assets that they need for their particular lifestyle.  They have found existing homes that come somewhat close to what they're looking for, but don't have every amenity they need.  They sometimes have investigated building a home from a stock plan that many builders offer, but realize that the changes they want to make are too expensive or the builder simply won't allow them to make the change.

Building a home of your own is always an exciting event for anyone. It is more likely, that you will be interested to live in such a home that can fulfill all your needs. While buying an already designed home, you may not get what you want whereas, if you design the home prior to construction, you can make the place your own heaven. If you appoint a trustworthy design-build general contractor for designing your home, the professionals talk to you and realize your tastes and needs. Then they can design the plan accordingly, while taking care of your budget as well.

It is advisable to invest only in the best; builder and material-wise. This way you can be sure your home will beat the odds of time and stand tall even during harsh weather. This does not mean you should go overboard with the price. That is only allowed if you are looking for a luxury custom home, but for a typical residential home, it is not. Go for quality at favorable prices. Land, engineering, building materials all factor into final cost of your home.

Purchasing a land
Before you purchase the land, you need to aggressively pursue getting all of the important information about it. More than one buyer has purchased what they thought was the ideal parcel, only to discover that the buildability for the type of structure they had in mind was not feasible. It’s an expensive mistake and one that is avoidable, if you do your homework. An experienced general contractor can help you navigate through this tedious process. There may be wetlands or other conservations issues to contend with or zoning and other land use regulations as well as easements.

Hire a full service design-build general contractor who can provide three dimensions rendering of interior and exterior of your perfect home. Nothing beats the experience of bringing up kids in your own custom home. These homes have every aspect of your tastes and style embedded into the very foundation of the home. From the structures, to the landscaping, they all speak of your likes; there is no other better way of telling to the world what is in your heart. Build your dream home from scratch and relish in the comfort and safety it accords you upon completion. These types of homes call for a significant investment, but it is worth it. A home designed and built to your own customizations will be more than just a home; it will be your sanctuary. Custom homes should clearly reflect on your tastes. It is therefore not advisable to just copy someone else designs because they look cool. Go for a home that will make you feel complete each new day. Your children will also grow calling the place home; let it be something that will remind them of you.

What to avoid?
Don’t try to piecemeal the zoning, permitting, mitigation, engineering, construction to separate entities; hire a full service general contractor who can provide all these service while taking care of your budget. Many land developers advertise custom home lots at very cheap price on a condition to hire a contractor from a selected group of builders to construct your home. In most cases, the land purchaser in these types of communities ends up paying three times the actual cost of construction.
